Why Starting An Online Business Is The New Job For Life

By | April 25, 2014

starting an online business“What! You’re giving up your job, for an internet business!” We’ve all had reactions like this, usually from friends and family with 9-to-5 jobs.

They don’t understand why anyone would leave a guaranteed pay check for the uncertainty of starting an online business.

Of course, years ago most people worked at the same job for the whole of their working lives. Entrepreneurs were considered courageous, but a little strange.

However today with redundancies, companies relocating overseas, and zero hour contracts – working for someone else is no longer the safe option.

Why Starting An Online Business Is The New Job For Life

When I began my first business, I attended a course for entrepreneurs. On the last night, as parting inspiration, the tutor said, “Job security is starting your own business”.

I’m inclined to agree with her. Starting an online business has given me greater control over my working life.

Becoming your own boss gives you the flexibility to adapt to life changes. Many women start an online business when they have children and don’t want to return to a regular 9-to-5 job.

An online business fits around most lifestyles, including travelling or caring duties. So you can continue working even if your personal circumstances change.

Location Independence

In a traditional 9-to-5 job, if you need to move, (for example, for a relationship or to care for a relative), you face the prospect of a job search in an unfamiliar place.

But an online business isn’t location dependent. You can work from anywhere. Some people even choose to move to a country with a low cost of living to enjoy a better quality of life and the benefits of building a business in another country.

Unemployment Protection

When you’re self-employed, even if one of your customers goes under or fires you, you still have a business. Work with a number of customers and run a constant marketing campaign, so you’ll always have enough work.

Although you may feel you have to do everything yourself, the upside is you’ll develop skills such as web design and marketing.  Even if one business fails, you’ll have the skills to start another one.

You can develop and improve your business as you learn. By learning how to develop a business you can support yourself for life.

Health Benefits

What if I get sick and can’t work? This is often a big worry for those considering a move to self-employment.  The good news is that entrepreneurs are healthier than the rest of the working population, so you’ll be less likely need health care in the first place.

If you are disabled, becoming self-employed makes it easier to continue working. Many disabled business owners find working from home and choosing their own hours allows them to successfully manage their condition and make a living at the same time.

Blogger Jon Morrow who helped established Copy Blogger and has spinal muscular atrophy is just one example of a hugely successful online business owner who has not let disability hold him back.

Retirement Fund

Online business owners often worry about losing pension benefits when they start working for themselves. But you can use your online business to build a retirement fund.

You can create information products like e-books and earn money for many years.  Pat Flynn of Smart Passive Income makes thousands of dollars a month from passive income sources.

You Can Do It!

In today’s economy nothing is guaranteed. Starting an online business doesn’t come with a pension plan or health insurance. But with a bit of planning you can create an online business that you can enjoy running for the rest of your working life.

I agree, Carol. Thanks for the motivation. I’m inclined to show this to my older family members who think I’m a little crazy. :)
